This collection of five ceramic sculptures symbolically represents some key ingredients of the artistic practice of R&F F&R.

The hourglass represents the patience required for certain ideas to grow – an important factor in any work.

The battery symbolises, on the one hand, the physical effort or energy needed to create a work and, on the other hand, the digital, artificial aspects of our contemporary, networked (art) world.

In contrast with the battery, the hammer is a symbol of the most basic and ancient technology; as an extension of the human arm, it is used to strike, hammer and beat materials. It represents strength, but also simplicity and the link to our ancestors.

The knife refers to dissecting and analysing certain phenomena, getting to the meat of a particular theme or subject.

Finally, the saw refers to our love of making things out of wood and to our studio work, which is at the heart of our artistic practice.

With these pictographic clay sculptures, F&R R&F continue their search for a visual language that straddles drawing, emoji and sculpture. In this series of sculptures, ‘the drawing’ becomes detached from ‘the canvas’ and the five sculptures take on a symbolic value.
